COVID-19 Updates

5/18/20

To Our Friends…

Thanks to donations from our community, Friends of Night People has been able to keep the essential programs operating during this crisis.  Thanks to you, those in need, have been provided with everything from bread to facemasks to keep them healthy and fed.

Throughout April, our food pantry gave out food to over 780 households.  During each food distribution, the items included fresh milk, bread, vegetables, and more.  Even though the smiles of our clients are now hidden behind masks, they are so thankful when they receive these products.   If you watch close, you see their eyes open up in relief and gratitude when they step to the table to collect the donation bags.  It is a satisfying experience I wish you could enjoy too.  You helped make their day better.

We continue to help the local Covid-19 shelter, assist those who arrive seeking advice and support, and communicate with our partner programs about how and when we will resume the many aspects of our mission.

Social distancing requirements are still in place as are restrictions on the donations we can accept at this time.  Please review the updates below if you haven’t already prior to arriving for services or to make donations.

To Our Friends…

Please know we will continue to do everything possible to keep you fed.  By continuing to offer a nightly meal we were encouraging people not to follow the law/rules.  Today, our food pantry continues to provide the fruits, vegetable, protein, and grains necessary to those who use our pantry or community dining room  while those who are homeless are being served at the temporary Covid 19 Shelters to whom we also provide meals on assigned days.

In March 2020 we temporarily transitioned to a food pantry only to encourage social distancing to reduce the spread of the virus and keep individuals safe.   If and when you need food come visit our food pantry open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11AM to 3PM.  The other days we will work to procure and prepare meals for distribution.

Each time someone arrives at our pantry we provide a three day supply of food for a minimum household size of 3 individuals. We often provide even more items and sweets too.  Come as often as you need during this pandemic.

Please stay six feet apart while waiting to receive food.  We must perform a simple registration when you arrive to receive food.  Please follow the direction given at the event, remain patient, and be respectful.

We will update our webpage, facebook, and messages posted in our windows
to communicate important messages.

If you are in urgent need of food outside our scheduled hours please call 211.  Many public schools are providing to go meals for families with youth, pick-ups are on Monday, Wednesday,

and Friday from 11AM to 1PM.

Individuals who use 394 Hudson Street as their mailing address can pick up their mail on Tuesday and Friday during our pantry hours.

To Our Friends…

Please know we will continue to do everything possible to keep you fed.  By continuing to offer a nightly meal we are encouraging people not to follow the law/rules.  We must prepare you and Friends of Night People and take additional actions to reduce spread of the virus.

We will transition to a food pantry only immediately and encourage social distancing during the next few weeks.  If and when you are out of food, you may choose to stop back for our food pantry which we anticipate will continue to operate on Tuesday and Friday from 11AM to 3PM.  After Sunday, 3/22/2020 at 6PM Friends of Night People will open to operate our food pantry to protect everyone’s safety.  The other days we will work to procure and prepare meals for distribution.

Please stay six feet apart while waiting to receive food.  We will perform a simple registration when you arrive to receive food.  Please follow the direction given at the event, remain patient, and be respectful.

Unfortunately, Putting Hunger on the Run 5k which was scheduled for April 18, 2020 is cancelled. The health and safety of our participants and volunteers is our top priority.
However the need of our guests and neighbors has not stopped. Friends of Night People will continue to serve as many people as we can during these trying times. We are encouraging runners to make a gift and run the race virtually. Share a photo of you “putting hunger on the run”. Even though we cannot be together this year we still have fun! Putting Hunger on the Run will be back next year! Wear your weirdest, ugliest, most fun running outfit, if you dare, post a photo, and we will host an online pole for the best or worst entry. A special award will be presented to the winner at the 2021 race.
